What Is AI Share of Voice and How Is It Calculated?

AI visibility metric guide
AI Share of Voice shows how much of the monitored AI-answer conversation belongs to your brand compared with the competitors tracked alongside it. It is a relative percentage: not raw search volume, not a Google ranking and not the same as SEO Analyser’s Search Visibility score.
Short answer
What is AI Share of Voice?
AI Share of Voice, or AI SOV, is the percentage of qualifying brand appearances your business receives out of all qualifying appearances recorded for you and the competitors in the same monitored AI-answer set. The set must use defined prompts, platforms, competitors and counting rules. A higher percentage means your brand occupies more of that measured competitive conversation; it does not automatically mean the answers are positive, accurate or generating traffic.

One label, a specific job
Why AI Share of Voice needs its own definition
“Share of voice” has long been used in advertising, media monitoring and SEO. In each case, the metric compares one brand’s presence with the total presence of a defined competitive group. The unit changes with the channel.
Traditional SEO share of voice may use rankings, estimated clicks or search demand. AI Share of Voice instead looks at monitored answers from AI platforms and asks how often your brand earns the counted presence relative to competitors. That counted presence might be a mention, an inclusion or a citation, but the report must state which one it uses.

AI Share of Voice
Relative brand presence inside a defined set of AI-generated answers.
SEO share of voice
Relative visibility in search results, commonly based on rankings, search demand or estimated traffic.
This article stays on the AI-specific metric. It mentions search visibility only where necessary to prevent dashboard labels from being confused.
Transparent calculation
How is AI Share of Voice calculated?
First define a qualifying appearance. For example, a report may count brand mentions, linked citations or answer inclusions. Do not silently mix those units. Once the unit and monitoring set are fixed, the basic calculation is:

AI Share of Voice (%)
Brand’s qualifying AI appearances÷All qualifying appearances across the tracked competitive set× 100
Illustrative example
35%
If your brand records 7 qualifying appearances and the complete tracked set records 20 appearances across your brand and competitors, the AI Share of Voice is 7 ÷ 20 × 100 = 35%. These figures are illustrative, not data from a customer account or a product benchmark.
If the competitive set records no qualifying appearances, the denominator is zero and AI SOV is undefined for that run, not 0%. Also document whether repeated references to the same brand in one answer count once or more than once. A conservative reporting rule is one qualifying event per brand, prompt, platform and run.
Measurement setup
What needs to be defined before the percentage means anything?
A calculation can be mathematically correct and still be misleading if its measurement set is vague. Record these five decisions next to every AI SOV report.
Counting unit
Specify whether the numerator counts mentions, answer inclusions, citations or another defined event. State the duplicate-count rule and keep separate metrics separate.
Prompt set
Use customer-relevant prompts with documented intent. Branded prompts and non-branded category prompts answer different questions.
AI platform set
Name the platforms included. SEO Analyser’s current AI Visibility page lists ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and Grok.
Competitor set
Define which brands form the denominator. Adding or removing a competitor can change the percentage even when your own presence stays the same.
Run and comparison rules
Record dates, locations, languages and repeat cadence so later results can be compared with an equivalent baseline. Google notes that AI Overviews and AI Mode may use different models and techniques, so the responses and links shown can vary; see its official AI features guidance for site owners.
Choose the unit
Mention share, inclusion share and citation share are not identical
An AI answer can name a brand without linking to it, cite a page without making the brand prominent, or include several competitors in one response. A useful report labels the event being counted.
| Counting unit | What qualifies | Best used for |
|---|---|---|
| Brand-mention share | The brand is named in the monitored answer. | Understanding competitive awareness inside answers, even when no source link is shown. |
| Answer-inclusion share | The brand forms a meaningful part of the response or recommendation set under the report’s inclusion rule. | Comparing which brands make the answer, rather than merely appearing in a footnote or source list. |
| Citation share | The brand’s domain or page is cited or linked where the platform exposes sources. | Comparing which sources AI platforms rely on across the monitored prompts. |
Metric map
AI Share of Voice vs AI Visibility vs Search Visibility
These metrics answer related but different questions. Use them together without treating their percentages or 0–100 scores as interchangeable.
Competitive AI metric
AI Share of Voice
Question: How much of the monitored AI-answer presence belongs to us compared with the tracked competitors?
Core inputs: qualifying appearances, prompts, platforms and competitor set.
Product summary
AI Visibility Score
Question: How strongly are we performing across monitored AI answers and the diagnostic foundations behind them?
Core inputs: platform reach, citations, answer inclusion, pillar scores and benchmark context.
Organic-search metric
Search Visibility
Question: How much ranking opportunity are we capturing across the measured search-keyword set?
Core inputs: search volume, ranking position and the applicable click-through-rate model.
Outcome data
Traffic Analytics
Question: What happened after people reached the website, and how does that compare with search performance?
Core inputs: connected GA4 and Google Search Console data.
The AI Visibility module provides the AI-answer and competitor context. Traffic Analytics connects search performance with on-site behaviour. AI SOV sits between them as a competitive visibility indicator; it does not replace either view.
Important separation
Search Visibility is a volume-weighted CTR score, not raw search volume
SEO Analyser’s Search Visibility metric belongs to the rankings and search-performance context. It uses search volume and ranking position to estimate captured opportunity. It is not the AI Share of Voice calculation.
Search Visibility (0–100)
100 × Σ(search volume × CTR at position) ÷ Σ(search volume)
Search volume is the approximate average monthly number of searches for the keyword in the selected location and language, combined with historical SERP positions. Only positions 1–20 contribute.
Reading the percentage
How should you interpret AI Share of Voice?
Start with the percentage, then open the platform, prompt and competitor detail before deciding what changed. The same total can describe very different competitive situations.
| What you see | What to inspect | Careful conclusion |
|---|---|---|
| AI SOV rises | Your qualifying appearances, competitor totals, newly won prompts and platform-level movement. | Your relative share improved inside the monitored set; determine whether your presence grew or competitors lost presence. |
| AI SOV is stable | Absolute appearances for every brand. | The competitive ratio stayed similar, but total AI presence may still have risen or fallen. |
| One platform improves | Prompts, mentions and citations on that platform. | Treat it as a platform-specific gain unless other platforms show the same direction. |
| AI SOV falls after adding a competitor | The changed denominator and the new competitor’s qualifying appearances. | The baseline changed; do not compare the totals as if the monitored set stayed constant. |
| Citation share rises, mention share does not | Which pages gained citations and how brands are framed in answer text. | Your source presence improved, but broader brand inclusion did not rise at the same rate. |
From metric to decision
A practical review workflow
- 01
Confirm the measurement set
Check the counting unit, prompts, platforms, competitors, language, location and run dates.
- 02
Compare relative and absolute movement
Read AI SOV alongside your own appearance count so a competitor decline is not mistaken for your growth.
- 03
Open the answer evidence
Review the exact prompts, answer context, citations and accuracy instead of relying on the percentage alone.
- 04
Locate the gap
Identify whether the weakness is concentrated by platform, prompt intent, content topic, page or source type.
- 05
Connect it to outcomes
Use Traffic Analytics, GA4 and Search Console to see whether visibility changes coincide with search performance or website activity, without assuming one caused the other.

Limits
What AI Share of Voice cannot tell you by itself
It does not measure sentiment
A mention can be positive, neutral, critical or factually wrong. Review answer context separately.
It is not a complete market share
The percentage applies to the tracked competitors and prompts, not every business or customer question in the market.
It is not search volume
AI SOV is a competitive share of counted appearances. Search volume estimates how often a query may be searched.
It is not Search Visibility
Search Visibility uses ranking, search-volume and CTR inputs. AI SOV uses AI-answer appearances and a competitive denominator.
It does not prove causation
A change after an optimisation is an observed association until prompt, page, timing and answer evidence support a stronger conclusion.
It depends on a stable denominator
Changing the competitors, platforms or qualifying-event definition creates a new baseline.

AI Share of Voice FAQs
What is AI Share of Voice?
AI Share of Voice is your brand’s percentage of qualifying appearances compared with all qualifying appearances recorded for you and the competitors in the same defined AI-answer monitoring set.
How do you calculate AI Share of Voice?
Define a qualifying event, such as a brand mention or citation. Divide your brand’s qualifying appearances by all qualifying appearances across the tracked competitive set, then multiply by 100. Keep the event type, prompts, platforms and competitors consistent.
Does SEO Analyser weight AI Share of Voice by prompt or platform?
The current public AI Visibility material displays Share of Voice but does not publish a weighting formula, so this guide does not claim that an additional product weighting exists.
Is AI Share of Voice the same as AI Visibility Score?
No. AI Share of Voice is a relative competitive percentage. SEO Analyser’s AI Visibility Score is a wider 0–100 product indicator that brings platform performance, diagnostic pillar scores and benchmark context together.
Is AI Share of Voice the same as Search Visibility?
No. Search Visibility is a volume-weighted CTR score based on ranking positions and search volume. AI Share of Voice compares counted brand appearances inside monitored AI answers.
Can AI Share of Voice increase without gaining more mentions?
Yes. Because it is a relative share, the percentage can rise if competitors lose qualifying appearances while your count stays unchanged. Always review the percentage and absolute counts together.
What is a good AI Share of Voice?
There is no universal threshold. A useful target depends on the competitor set, prompt coverage, market and event being counted. Compare like-for-like trends and inspect whether the brand is present accurately on commercially important prompts.
Summary
AI Share of Voice measures your share of qualifying brand appearances inside a defined AI-answer and competitor set. Its value comes from transparent counting rules and consistent prompts, platforms and competitors. Keep it separate from AI Visibility Score and the volume-weighted Search Visibility metric, then use the underlying answers, not the percentage alone, to decide what needs attention.
